New Tax Year Business July Payment on Account

How to Get Ahead for the Next Tax Year and Reduce Your July Payment on Account

As we approach the final months of the tax year, now is the perfect time to take stock of your business finances. Whether you’re a sole trader or a limited company, acting early can help you avoid last-minute stress and even reduce your upcoming tax bill. In this blog, we’ll outline how you can prepare for the new tax year and take advantage of potential tax-saving opportunities.

Why February is the Best Time to prepare for the new Tax Year

By February, you’re already 10–11 months into your financial year, which means you should have a good idea of your income and expenses. This is an ideal time to:

  • Review your financial performance so far
  • Ensure all income and expenses are accurately recorded
  • Identify any outstanding invoices or payments

The earlier you send your accounts to us, the more time we have to review your figures and suggest ways to optimise your tax position before the year-end.

For self-employed individuals and those under self-assessment, Payments on Account are advance payments towards your next tax bill, based on your previous year’s income. However, if your income has dropped significantly, you may be able to reduce your July Payment on Account—but you need to act quickly.

To request a reduction, you’ll need to provide evidence that your income is lower than in the previous tax year. If you send your documents to us before the end of May, we can help you calculate a more accurate payment and submit the necessary adjustments to HMRC.

Making Sure You’re Using the Best Accounting Software

Keeping your accounts in order is much easier when using the right software. If you’re still relying on spreadsheets or outdated systems, now is the time to upgrade. Cloud-based platforms like Xero can help you:

  • Track income and expenses in real time
  • Automate invoicing and bank reconciliations
  • Generate financial reports with ease

Early Tax Consideration = Tax Efficient Optimisation

Preparing early for the next tax year not only makes the process smoother but also opens up valuable opportunities for tax efficiency. Don’t leave things until the last minute; early planning allows us to take action while there’s still time to make meaningful improvements.
