Identity Verification for Directors and PSCs

What You Need to Know (And Why You Shouldn’t Panic)

Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, all company directors and People with Significant Control (PSCs) will soon be legally required to verify their identity with Companies House.

This is part of a wider reform to improve transparency and prevent abuse of UK corporate structures.

When Does It Apply?

  • Identity verification will become mandatory in autumn 2025
  • Companies House has started contacting companies now to give them time to prepare

Don’t Panic If You Receive a Letter or Email

You may already have received a communication from Companies House. There’s no need to worry. They are simply giving companies a head start before the law takes effect.

We are fully aware of the changes and are already working with our clients to implement them. If you receive a letter or email, just notify us and we can help you through the process, if you need further assistance.

Who Needs to Verify?

  • Company Directors
  • People with Significant Control (e.g., owning >25% shares or voting rights)
  • Anyone who files on behalf of a company

How Do You Verify?

Verification can be done:

  1. Online via GOV.UK
  2. In-person at selected Post Offices (if eligible)

While Streamline is your Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), we cannot complete the ID verification on your behalf — this must be done by each individual directly.

However, if you need support, we’re happy to help. You can book an appointment for us to take you through over the phone or at our office for assistance with the process (a nominal admin fee will apply).

🎯 What Happens Next?

Once verified, you’ll receive a personal Companies House code. From autumn 2025, you’ll use this code to confirm your identity for each company role you hold.

What If You Don’t Verify?

Failure to verify will mean:

  • You won’t be able to submit company filings
  • You’ll risk financial penalties
  • You may be disqualified from running companies

What You Should Do Now

  • Don’t ignore letters or emails from Companies House
  • Let us know if you or your directors/PSCs would like us to help with verification
  • Respond promptly to any ID requests we send

We’re here to make sure you stay compliant — with no stress.
